Montana Preservation Alliance and Headwaters RC&D are pleased to announce an upcoming workshop on The Basics of Heritage Areas. Focused on the historic landscapes and cultural heritage of Southwestern Montana, the workshop will run twice, to enable many people from SW Montana, our state and our region to attend.

Heritage Areas: Across the country, there are now 2 dozen national heritage areas where millions of people live, work and prosper. Each is eligible for up to $1 million a year in federal funding to help promote culture, heritage, tourism and economic development. It’s a concept that has transformed towns like Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Yuma where, like Montana, traditional industries formed the backbone, but new strategies were needed to rebuild a strong economy. Heritage areas make culture, the arts and history the centerpiece of new development, preserving historic places and using them to draw visitors and business investment.

Presenters: At our invitation, the Heritage Development Institute will bring to Montana 5 widely-respected experts, each a national leader in efforts to wed culture, tourism, preservation and economic development. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn ~ to hear from other states with highly successful heritage programs and from the CEOs who run them.

When? Virginia City, September 23 * Butte, September 24

Step Back in Time: The workshops will be held in two wonderful, newly restored historic venues ~ Virginia City’s Community Gymnasium and Butte’s famed Silver Bow Center.
