Multnomah County dumps Microsoft in favor of Google to shave as much as $600,000 a year from the county budget.

The government agency said that 3,500 county employees — excluding staff in the sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices — will be using Google apps for e-mail, calendars and contacts Monday. Previously, they relied on Microsoft Outlook for the same functions.

The move follows a sprinkling of other municipalities across the county, including Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Orlando, Florida that have adopted Google apps since last year.
