In Germany, even the curb could help charge your electric car.

German technology company Rheinmetall has developed an electric vehicle charging concept that integrates charging points directly into sidewalk curbs, offering an alternative to conventional charging posts.
The idea is simple: instead of installing a separate charging column on the pavement, the charging equipment is built into the curb itself. Drivers can park alongside the designated section and connect their vehicles, while the charging infrastructure takes up far less additional space.
The system is designed to deliver up to 22 kilowatts of charging power, making it suitable for AC charging in locations where vehicles remain parked for a while.
This could be particularly useful in cities where street parking is common but pavement space is limited. Traditional charging stations can sometimes obstruct pedestrian areas, while curb-integrated designs aim to make better use of existing urban infrastructure.
The concept also offers an interesting possibility for residents who do not have private driveways or garages. If widely deployed, curbside charging could make it easier for people living in apartments to charge electric vehicles near their homes.
Of course, the technology still needs suitable installation, electrical connections, weather protection and careful planning to ensure that sidewalks remain safe and accessible. A maximum rating of 22 kW also does not mean every vehicle will charge at that rate under all conditions.
Still, the idea shows how cities could rethink the infrastructure needed for electric mobility.
Sometimes, the future of clean transportation is not about building more things everywhere. It is about finding smarter ways to integrate what we need into the spaces we already have.
