Rehberg talks budget, blame

Congress is painting itself into a financial corner and running out of time to put a halt to mounting budget deficits, U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg told the Tribune editorial board Wednesday.

The Montana Republican discussed his efforts to trim ineffective or burgeoning programs, his concern that excessive defense cuts could threaten Malmstrom Air Force Base and his reasons for giving up a "relatively safe House seat" to oppose Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in this year’s election.

Rehberg said the mounting federal deficit, which has doubled from "a high, but manageable 8 trillion (dollars)" in 2007, and the continued recession are threatening the golden years of senior citizens who are relying on investments, as well as future generations.
