Request from Dave Gibson for examples of the effects of the current tax structure on Economic Development in Montana

As you are all aware, we are developing recommendations for changing Montana’s tax structure to encourage economic development.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to do a systematic and scientific study of
businesses or individuals who have made decisions to leave (or not come in the first place) as a result of our tax structure. It would be helpful to hear from you any experiences you have had that would
support (or contradict) the hypothesis that our tax structure, or perception thereof, has impacted your ability to attract, retain or grow businesses in your respective communities.

(This was addressed to the economic development professionals of Montana but I wanted to send it to the Roundtable members as well. Do you have any examples of the tax strucutre affecting investment in or the development of businesses in Montana? How has it affected your business? – Russ)

We understand that
confidentiality is very important so if you cannot share names and numbers it would still be helpful to get whatever information you are comfortable disclosing.

If you have experiences you would be willing to
share with us, please send them to Judy Paynter at the Dept. of Revenue ([email protected]).

Thanks for considering this request,

Dave Gibson (Office of Econ. Opportunity)

Kurt Alme (Director of Revenue)
