Western Zen: Lakers coach Phil Jackson kicks off governors’ conference

Whether it’s been from New York or Chicago or Los Angeles, for 37 years Phil Jackson has ended basketball season the same way: on the open road, headed home to his beloved Montana.

The most successful coach in the history of the NBA by any measure, Jackson has just one rule for his annual return to Montana, where he was born, in 1945, in Deer Lodge.

"I refuse to fly after the season is over," the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers explained Sunday to an unlikely forum – the governors of 10 western states attending the Western Governors’ Association annual meeting here.
