Heath Van Eaton came up with the idea of using wheat straw and recycled plastics to produce a natural fiber composite as a wood substitute. He and his wife, Amy, decided more than a decade ago to pursue his ideas, “and to do it right.”

The Wyoming association was born two years ago and is dedicated to spreading information to beginning growers and to networking with wineries and grape growers in neighboring states such as Nebraska, where the industry is thriving.

After a steady decline in UW enrollment throughout the 1990s, recently the university’s Outreach School has helped boost enrollment back over the 13,000 mark, and now it appears the Hathaway Scholarship will continue the university’s growth into the future.

The pilot program demonstrated that many women have the motivation and initiative to complete training in nontraditional fields. As long as the state and its private partners fund it and employers hire the graduates, the program will fulfill its goal of improving the wages and lives of the participants.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal, who appointed industry officials as seven of the council’s nine voting members, urged the board to “think 40 years down the road.”
