Kirby: Getting nowhere fast in Montana – "Safe and Prudent"

It would be unreasonable and imprudent to land the space shuttle on any Montana highway with more than a 25 percent grade and covered in snow and bison.

All of that changed in 1999, when the Montana Supreme Court ruled that a speed limit based on "reasonable and prudent" was far too vague for a buffalo — never mind the average motorist — to comprehend. Montana freeways have been 75 mph ever since.
