The centers will target rural and isolated communities with curricula and programs developed collaboratively with local two-year colleges and school districts. The goal of the new centers is to improve the transition and college-going rates of New Mexico students into college career programs and technical careers.

The proposal would make the state the first in the nation to give some taxpayer money directly to college students instead of to colleges and universities. Students would use vouchers to help pay tuition at public and some private in-state schools.

"I find the English language skills, reading ability and mathematics ability of most people who have gone to reputable schools to be atrocious. What’s worse, they’re ignorant about their ignorance," Studzinski said.

Beginning this autumn, specialized texts such as "Educational Research" and "Social Psychology," which normally retail in hardback for about $100, can for the first time be bought online for about $50.

"The relationship between effective leadership of today’s schools and student achievement is well known," said Linda McCulloch, state superintendent of public instruction.

The On It Foundation has launched a Guaranteed Computer Loan
Program for any individual to purchase a computer regardless of income level
or credit status. This program, called “Jump On It” is designed to allow
applicants the ability to purchase a new or refurbished computer with no
interest.

Today’s students represent another shift, away from those who flocked to e-commerce programs and other flash-in-the-pan features of premillennial business education.
