Now in its 3rd year, Venture Capital in the Rockies showcases the region’s most promising companies for an audience of over 150 venture investors and service professionals from around the region and across the country.

In addition to presentations by regional startups looking for venture backing, Fraiman says she’s putting together three panels for Venture Northwest charged with taking a frank look at what’s needed to improve Oregon’s startup scene.

The contest began in late January with 285 entries from about 100 communities. It is a six-month process that includes mentoring and comments from judges on selected plans. It also leads to valuable public and media exposure. In the past, finalists have raised a reported $15 million in private equity, such as angel and venture capital.

Founded in 2007 by Andrew Hyde, Startup Weekend has already been successful in more than 53 cities and 12 countries, McGrath said. More than 168 companies have come out of Startup Weekends across the globe and at least a half-million dollars has been invested in these companies.

Participants will compete for more than $100,000 in regional prizes and ultimately a national Grand Prize of $250,000 in cash and services.

"There are some that want to invest in things that are good, do well and help people. There are others that are looking for a straight forward return. We think we offer both, the ability to do well and do good."

With a total prize package of more than $60,000, awards were given for categories such as “best elevator pitch” (a 60-second summary presentation of the business opportunity), “best written business plan” and “best presentation” in several divisions.

Teams registering by April 22nd receive a $50 discount on their application and have until the final deadline of May 22nd to update and complete their application.
