Want economic growth? Start with entrepreneurs

People like Kathryn Dickel are Iowa’s future.

The 32-year-old Windsor Heights woman is an entrepreneur. She’s started two businesses – IowaTIX and Swaelu Media. And she’s one of those "young people" everyone at the Statehouse seems so concerned about these days.

Dickel is also one of the lead organizers of a new group called the Iowa Entrepreneurs Coalition, an association of people trying to start their own businesses. They believe Iowa’s policy-makers could be doing a lot more to foster start-up companies like theirs.

She wants Iowa to become the "Entrepreneur State," both in name and in fact. "Iowa is making a mistake by narrowly framing itself and its economic-development strategy as a ‘bio-tech’ or ‘advanced-manufacturing’ state," she says.

We should think more broadly.

So what must policy-makers do? Dickel and the coalition list several priorities for the state and others interested in assisting start-ups:
