University of Montana Business school report

I am delighted to be able to participate in the inaugural edition of Western Montana InBusiness.

At the University of Montana’s School of Business,http://www.business.umt.edu/ we have historically been extremely active in assisting businesses in our region. It begins with our mission statement: “The faculty and staff of the School of Business Administration at the University of Montana-Missoula are committed to excellence in innovative experiential learning and professional growth through research and service.’

Commitment to “excellence in innovative experiential learning” is the core of our mission. Pedagogically, we are moving our faculty from a teaching model to a learning model. A better way to describe this transition is moving our faculty from the “sage on the stage” to the “guide on the side.” More fundamentally, the more that you can engage students in the learning process, the educational value they gain is enhanced dramatically.

We have several vehicles within our school that provide an educational laboratory for our learning model. Specific examples are:

• The Small Business Institute http://www.business.umt.edu/busresources/default.asp#Small%20Business%20Institute

• Montana World Trade Center http://www.mwtc.org/

• Montana Business Connections http://www.mbc.umt.edu/

• Internship Program http://www.business.umt.edu/student/internships/default.asp

Each of the aforementioned provides an opportunity for our faculty and students to assist Montana businesses. More importantly, our students have an opportunity to “try on” what they have learned in the classroom in the real world. On average our faculty and students work with about 200 businesses within our region each year.
Specific examples would be:

• Accessing the Small Business Institute, whereby faculty and students would assist a business in developing a personnel handbook.

• Working with the Montana World Trade Center in defining what regions in the world might be best for selling your product or service.

• Working with Montana Business Connections in identifying resources, such as someone to assist you in writing a business plan that would be available to your company.

• Using a student intern to assist you in developing a computer system for accounting and inventory control.

If you feel that your business has a specific need and at the same time you are willing to provide a learning opportunity for our students, please do not hesitate to contact me directly and hopefully we can match your need to one of our programs. We at the business school have a reputation and a long tradition of providing high quality service to businesses throughout our region. I can be contacted at (406) 243-6195 or [email protected].

Larry Gianchetta is dean of the School of Business Administration at the University of Montana. http://www.business.umt.edu/faculty/Gianchetta/default.asp Each quarter, this space will focus on a program or a faculty member worthy of note at the School of Business Administration.
