Touch America Internet server hacked- 7000 customer accounts compromised

Touch America, an Internet service provider, announced Thursday that unknown hackers broke into one of its Internet servers and were able to compromise a file containing information on about 7,000 customers in Montana and six other states.

By the Associated Press

Touch America, a fiber-optic and broadband service provider, said most of the affected customers were in Montana, but some residential and small commercial Internet users also were affected in Washington, Minnesota, Colorado, North Dakota, Wyoming and Idaho.

"We have an ongoing investigation into this very serious matter and are notifying the proper authorities," said Gina Konen, manager of IP Services.

She said the company immediately changed all of the compromised customers’ passwords to protect information on affected customers’ computers, such as e-mails.

Customers with the "in-tch.com" service will have to call Touch America and obtain a new password.

Affected customers will need to call the company at 1-800-823-4664 and press 3 when prompted, Konen said.
