Tenkara Summit – USA (A new (ancient) way to fish), 8/27, West Yellowstone, Montana

Please join us in the first Tenkara Summit to be held in USA on the August 27th, 2011 in West Yellowstone, MT.

Two years after we introduced tenkara to the US, the method continues to captivate an ever growing group of people who enjoy its simplicity and effectiveness. And, so, it is time to hold the first official tenkara gathering in the country.

We will count on the special presence of our sensei, Dr Hisao Ishigaki, who will be visiting from Japan especially for the occasion to talk and demonstrate tenkara. We’ll also enjoy the participation of the people who have helped introduce tenkara to the country, Chris "Tenkara Bum" Stewart, Craig Mathews (Blue Ribbon Flies), Dr. Kevin Kelleher (author of the book "Tenkara: Radically Simple, Ultralight Fly Fishing"), Ryan Jordan (Backpacking Light), Tom Sadler and more. Planning is still happening, and more items will be included in the schedule.

Not many Montana fishing guides stop for afternoon tea, but Ryan Jordan is not your average Montana guide. And neither is his style of fishing.

Jordan, 41, is a proponent of tenkara, a method of fly fishing imported from Japan that is slowly gaining a foothold in the American West.

Tenkara, literally translated as "from heaven," evolved on the island nation more than 200 years ago as Japanese fishermen perfected their method on small, fast-moving, heavily bouldered streams.
