Tacoma’s new role: Consultant to college-town wannabes

How do you know the city of Everett is serious about landing a new branch University of Washington campus? It visited Tacoma’s branch UW campus this week, that’s how.

Tacoma got it right: It rallied support among business and civic leaders, and it wisely chose to build its campus in the heart of its downtown, thus pulling off two important things: Becoming a college town and helping UW spread its degrees, and pumping up its economic development.

The Herald newspaper in Everett reports that city officials traveled to Tacoma to see how it’s done. "The reason we are here in Tacoma is we want to be like you when we grow up," said Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, according to The Herald.
