Salary data easy to find for job hunt

Salary data once closely guarded by human-resource professionals are now a few clicks away on the Internet. There’s no need to consider a job without knowing what to expect in pay. And there’s no need to guess what your experience and background are worth.

"There’s no excuse for going into a salary negotiation without having some sense of what to negotiate," says Tony Lee, editor in chief of the career site http://www.careerjournal.com.

You’ll find some good tools at http://www.salary.com, which is linked to several publication and career sites, including http://www.careerbuilder.com and http://www.monster.com. Salary data by industry, as well as hiring demand by industry, are posted at careerjournal.com with continually updated worldwide salary surveys.

http://www.Careerjournal.com’s "SalaryExpert" tool gives a quick look at pay by job title and geographic location. (Click on "salary by title" under the "salary & hiring info" section.)

"SalaryWizard" on http://www.salary.com has a similar three-click look at salary information for a particular job title by region.

If you want to take it a step further for a more detailed report, check out the site’s "Personal Salary Report."

Once you zero in on the numbers, both sites offer good advice on salary negotiations for a new job and following performance reviews. Salary.com offers a salary negotiation worksheet.

That helps level the playing field for salary negotiations.
