PacifiCorp wants to sell renewable energy

PacifiCorp has asked state regulators to let its 56,000 eastern Idaho customers choose to have the power they consume generated by renewable sources for an extra monthly charge.

Associated Press Spokesman Review

The company wants to guarantee customers their power comes from wind, geothermal or solar for a charge of $1.95 for each 100 kilowatt hours. In its petition to the Idaho Public Utilities Commission, the company said more than 11,000 customers in Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming already participates in what it calls the "Blue Sky" program.

The commission is accepting public comments for the next three weeks. PacifiCorp wants to begin offering the option on Sept. 1.

PacifiCorp says it will either buy green energy and arrange for its transmission to the purchasing customer within two years of purchase or it will buy so-called "green tags," or credits, for green energy that the company will use but that will not necessarily go to the customer who paid the extra fee.
