Celebrated Author Maya Angelou to Speak at MSU

Leadership Institute Announces Fall Events & Endowment

Dr. Maya Angelou, who is often called “an extraordinary renaissance woman and one of America’s greatest voices of contemporary black literature,” will speak in the MSU Ballrooms at 7:30 pm on Monday, November 1st. Angelou is a celebrated poet, memoirist, educator, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist.

Angelou has been honored by universities, literary organizations, government agencies and special interest groups, making her one of the most honored writers of her generation. She has received a National Book Award nomination for “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” Pulitzer Prize nomination for “Just Give Me A Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Diiie,” the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Lincoln Medal in 2008. Angelou has also served on two presidential committees.

“An Evening with Maya Angelou” is sponsored by the MSU Leadership Institute, ASMSU, Office of the President, and the MSU Parent Family Association. Tickets are available starting 10:00 am MST on Thursday, September 23rd at all TicketsWest locations at $6 for students, $20 for adult general admission, and $75 for a limited number of reserved seats. Ticket prices may have additional service/handling fees.

All revenues from reserved seating will go directly to the MSU Leadership Institute Endowment. “With this important endowment, and with the backing of our community, we hope to create an enduring base of support for events of this caliber,” stated Carmen McSpadden, Director of the MSU Leadership Institute. The endowment has a goal of $750,000. “Our vision for proceeds from the endowment includes expanding leadership trainings centered on positive personal change, professionalism, cross-disciplinary leadership, and whenever possible, extending the stay of visits from influential individuals such as Maya Angelou,” added McSpadden.

In addition to Angelou, this semester’s MSU Leadership Institute speaker line-up challenges students to think deeper about their current leadership roles and their impact on others. On Wednesday, October 27th at 7:00 pm in MSU SUB Ballroom A, Geoff Bellman, author of the bestselling book “Extraordinary Groups: How Ordinary Teams Achieve Amazing Results,” will provide insider tips on teambuilding and positive management skills. Bellman has written six books, with 300,000 in print and in a dozen languages. Free and open to the public, this event is co-sponsored by Hopa Mountain.
