Montana’s Hidden Sector: Non-Profit Wages and Employment

To make sense of something as vast and complex
as an economy, we must find ways to classify and
organize information. One of the most common
methods economists use is the North American
Industrial Classification System (NAICS), which
groups businesses based on similarities in production,
products, and services. This system provides an efficient
way to summarize data and identify trends specific to
certain industry sectors. However, using only one way
to classify industry sectors can leave some areas of the
economy hidden.
