Montana World Affairs Council Hosts Former Ambassador/Senator Max Baucus to Discuss China, North Korea and the U. S. at multiple events.

Baucus was in Missoula on Tuesday to address both local students and the Montana World Affairs Council https://www.montanaworldaffairs.org/ on the latest North Korea developments. It was the second gathering in two weeks, following a World Affairs Council https://www.montanaworldaffairs.org/ session that drew 225 people on Oct. 9.

North Korea has exploded six nuclear bombs in its quest for military respect. Montanans pass that many well-tested nuclear missiles driving along Highway 89 between Augusta and Choteau.

Retired Ambassador to China Max Baucus doesn’t think there’s much chance the United States will use force to halt the Hermit Kingdom’s atomic saber-rattling. But he does believe the world needs a resolution to Kim Jong-un’s disruptive actions, and the United States should get busy.

On North Korea, Baucus urges less tweeting, more diplomacy

North Korea has no intention of ending its nuclear ambitions and China won’t allow the peninsula to fall into chaos, two factors that may force the U.S to accept the north as a nuclear power, the former U.S. ambassador to China said this week.

Instead of Twitter battles and name-calling, Max Baucus said, the United States should focus its energy on bringing Kim Jon Un onto the international stage. It’s not a popular option, he said, though it may be among the only options open to the Trump administration.

"To some degree, the U.S. has to get real, sit down and talk with China, Japan and South Korea, and try to figure out a way — it’s going to be very difficult — where Kim is given assurance that we’re not going to topple his regime," Baucus said. "He’ll probably become a nuclear state, but he’s got to be brought into the world community."

I had the privilege of attending the afternoon virtual discussion hosted by Inspired Classroom http://www.inspiredclassroom.com with several Montana high schools. It was encouraging to hear the depth of the questions posed by the students on a range of areas relating to the China/North Korea/US relationship. It was also wonderful to see the power of technology being used to bring these students together with Max without a long bus ride. Inspired Classroom is truly setting the standard for distance learning to increase the opportunities for all Montana students. Today theyr’e hosting a number of classrooms nationwide to learn about the growing mountain lion population on the MPG ranch just south of Missoula. Here kitty, kitty, kitty.

Max was outstanding that the evening presentation to several hundred attendees at the Montana World Affairs Council https://www.montanaworldaffairs.org/ presentation. It was inspiring to see many hands go up each time he was ready for another question. Great community interest and participation. We hope to be able to include the video of both events on this page in the near future so stay tuned.

The MWAC continues to bring world-class speakers to not only present their expertise but to also interact with those concerned about world affairs and how they’re impacting our lives now and in the future. I’d like to encourage you to attend future events as well as support the organization. It’s our future and as Max encouraged the high school students: "Get out their and see the world. Meet the people and make a difference."

If you can’t do that, then Join MWAC. https://www.montanaworldaffairs.org/
