Why a Nonprofit Congress?

The time has come for nonprofits of all sizes and scope to come together. The nonprofit charitable sector has long served our nation with distinction – from helping individuals survive (through health care, domestic violence centers, meals, and other human services) to helping local communities thrive (through artistic, cultural, educational, environmental, and other enriching services). Every American has been touched at one time or another by the work of a nonprofit.

Despite the value that nonprofits add to the quality of life in America, the survival of many charitable organizations is uncertain. Due to a convergence of factors – including declining resources, increasing demands to deliver more services, widespread misunderstanding about nonprofits, mounting operational complexities, and fragmentation within the sector – nonprofits find themselves operating in a most challenging environment. The communities we serve and the issues we care about suffer when we are fragmented and isolated. Now more than ever, nonprofits need to unite around our common values, develop a shared vision and priorities, and exercise our collective voice for a better future.

The success of the Nonprofit Congress depends on the active involvement of people like you. If you care about the future of our society and how we can ensure a new, stronger, bolder, and prominent role for the nonprofit sector, then join us for a Town Hall Meeting and become a part of this exciting effort.

How will it work?

There are four phases to the Nonprofit Congress: (1) Personal Declaration, (2) Town Hall Meetings, (3) National Meeting, and (4) Taking Action.

Phase I: Personal Declaration

Individuals across the country are showing their commitment to nonprofits by signing the Declaration for America’s Nonprofits. Add your name to the thousands of supporters who have already signed on. The message is clear – a united nonprofit sector is vital to our society.

Phase II: Town Hall Meetings

Nonprofit leaders and their allies are coming together through local Town Hall meetings to affirm the values that all nonprofits share, identify challenges, and generate solutions to the issues that all nonprofits face. If you are unable to attend a Montana Town Hall, please share your thoughts online.

We want to hear from you!

Phase III: National Meeting

Approximately 500 nonprofit delegates and 200 at-large participants will gather in the nation’s capital on October 16 -17, 2006 to review the summaries from the Town Halls and the online discussion forums. Delegates will affirm the shared values of nonprofits, determine the priorities of the nonprofit sector, and create an action plan for charitable nonprofits. Be a part of this exciting discussion by registering to be an at-large participant today!

Phase IV: Taking Action

After the National Meeting, the Nonprofit Congress will continue to build the capacity of delegates and at-large participants to take action at the local, state, and national levels in partnership with media, business, government, and civic leaders. In addition, the Nonprofit Congress will link participants to key local partners, such as state associations of nonprofits, in an effort to strengthen the Nonprofit Congress network. Become an at-large participant to the National Meeting today and help to unite and strengthen all charitable nonprofits.
