Leadership Kansas was founded in 1978 by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) to help identify and enhance the future leaders for Kansas.
*
Leadership Kansas is governed by a Board of trustees comprised of six individuals representing the past three program class years and eight people elected or appointed by KCCI. *
*
Each Leadership Kansas class is comprised of 35 people selected from more than 100 applicants and more than 500 nominations. The classes are selected using criteria such as occupation, geographic location, race, and gender.
*
The mission of Leadership Kansas is to: (1) identify 35 people from across Kansas, (2) inform them about the issues facing the state, (3) inspire them to become involved, and (4) serve as a catalyst for the development of leadership throughout Kansas.
*
Leadership Kansas is funded from two main sources. First is the tuition from participants ($450 each) and second is interest from an endowment fund that receives contributions from past class participants.
*
The programming for Leadership Kansas is developed by a program committee and the organization’s Board of Trustees. Leadership Kansas has an overall program chair and at least six local program chairs whose efforts are structured and coordinated by the overall program chair.
*
Leadership Kansas has six program sessions for each class year. They last between 1-1/2 and 2 full days. They take place in the months of May through October.
