The project also becomes part of the National Hydrography Dataset that is linked to approximately three million pieces of information within the federal EPA. The maps provide data on the flow of surface waters that affect water quality and chemistry, fish habitat and other environmental factors.

The commonwealth announced it is the first state in the continental U.S. to complete the digital mapping of surface waters.

Kentucky’s Office of Geographic Systems http://ogis.state.ky.us/ has an extensive Web site with a variety of datasets available to the public. Information can be located and accessed, static map products can be downloaded, and several Internet mapping solutions are accessible on the site. Kentucky’s Geographic Explorer http://kygeonet.state.ky.us/metadataexplorer/ allows detailed examination of various locations throughout the state, according to specific criteria such as political boundaries, agricultural, atmospheric, demographic data and other topics.
