"If people are going to be upset at anyone, they need to be upset at Helena." MCPS trustees OK $1.14M general fund levy request to cover possible spending cuts by Legislature

Saying they’re "playing chicken with Helena," the Missoula County Public Schools Board of Trustees set a $1.14 million price tag on a general fund levy for schools while fearing the Legislature may gut public education.

The measure asking Missoula voters for that amount will appear on the May 3 mail-in ballot, along with separate line items for building-reserve levies of $2.5 million (elementary, five years) and $3.15 million (high school, seven years), and three open school board seats.

"We are dependent on Helena," said MCPS Superintendent Alex Apostle, echoing frustrations by the board and others Wednesday night. "If people are going to be upset at anyone, they need to be upset at Helena."
