City Club Missoula takes shape with different opinions in civil, civic discourse

Former Missoula mayor Dan Kemmis grew up on politics.

His family helped settle Sidney, in far eastern Montana, and his great-uncle Walter served in the state Legislature. Civic discourse was common at home, and politics seemed like a natural occupation to a young boy growing up in the Kemmis household.

"It wasn’t until later that I realized there were those that held a different opinion," Kemmis said to a round of laughter at Friday’s third meeting of the fledgling City Club Missoula.
Kemmis, former speaker of the Montana House of Representatives, came to the club, which met in the Governor’s Room at the Florence Hotel, as something of a sage on Friday. The City Club is a new organization with a mission of fostering civic – and civil – discourse on issues facing the city, both now and in the future.
