Become A Writing Coach For Grades 7-12 – Writing Coaches Of Missoula Training Sessions, 2/6 Or 2/9

Become a Writing Coach

Volunteer

Caring adults of all backgrounds are needed. Scheduling is flexible–you decide when and how much you want to coach.

All volunteers must attend a three-hour training session before they begin to coach. We provide on-going support throughout the year.

UPCOMING TRAININGS:

MONDAY, FEB. 6th, 5:30-8:30pm, LOLO MIDDLE SCHOOL, LOLO

THURSDAY, FEB. 9th, 6-9pm, UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA, MISSOULA

Our trainings are conducted by the Associate Director of the UM Writing Center, the past chair of the Loyola English Dept., and myself. We combine lecture and role-play to instruct new recruits in our 5-step coaching method and explain the logistics of volunteering. I’ve attached our current guidelines.

Our goal is to encourage writing and help students improve their written communication skills. We meet with students to discuss their ideas and how to effectively express them on paper. We generally conference twice with each student, on a first and second draft. Coaching sessions are 20-30 minutes. The students we work with are in grades 7-12 with a wide variety of abilities and various levels of engagement.
