An angler’s paradise: Montana’s ‘Small water’ Smith River long on fish

Most of Michael Higuera’s fishing trips involve staying in hotels, shuttling cars and usually floating down a river with the sound of cars on an adjacent highway following him the whole way.

The Smith River offers a completely different experience.

"It’s just unique that you can do a multi-day camping and fishing trip," the fisherman from Boulder, Colo., said. "It’s just nice to check out for a few days."

Higuera made a trip down the Smith River a couple weeks ago with several friends. They were likely sharing the 60-mile stretch of river between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge with about 400 other people. But one afternoon, while taking a break in the shade, no one else was in sight.
