A Telecast on New Directions and Opportunities in Rural Economic Development -Tuesday, May 4th from 3:00 – 4:00 P.M. EDT

The telecast will focus on issues raised in an EDA-funded study, “Competitiveness in Rural U. S. Regions: Learning and Research Agenda.” Topics to be addressed include:

• The critical importance of coordinating economic develop- ment strategies in rural and adjacent urbanized areas.

• A discussion focused on alternative approaches for rural America; relying on the once advantageous labor costs it
offered is no longer valid due to cheaper labor available
off-shore. This will require developing an alternate
strategy that includes a series of specialized, strong
clusters that enhance a region’s performance. Clusters
suited to rural America will also be a focus of the
discussion

• Enhancing entrepreneurship in rural America and its role in bolstering rural economies.

• How to access federal programs with resources available
for rural economic development efforts.
