Job Description
The Program Officer, Local Community Foundations (LCF) serves as the Montana Community Foundation’s (MCF) key liaison with Local Community Foundations across Montana, focused on supporting MCF Affiliates as they serve their respective communities. The Program Officer is responsible for developing, executing, and administering all aspects of the LCF program. The Montana Community Foundation partners with 45 Local Community Foundation Affiliates to further philanthropy throughout Montana through grantmaking to support stronger and more resilient communities.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations:
Program Management
- Development, execution, and management of all aspects of the Local Community Foundation program and associated projects. Current projects include the Reimagining Rural Program, Transfer of Wealth Study, LCF Annual Convenings, and LCF Disaster Preparedness and Recovery programming, to name a few.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Montana Community Foundation and Local Community Foundations, placing special emphasis on serving LCF Affiliates.
- In coordination with key staff, develop, implement, and monitor a multi-year LCF endowment incentive matching program.
- Responsible for planning and executing annual LCF convenings and other LCF events, as well as developing and implementing an annual plan to ensure each Affiliate and Affiliate Partner has an in-person meeting with MCF staff (LCF Program Officer and Philanthropy officer).
- Coordinate ongoing technical training for MCF’s Affiliates and Affiliate Partners focused on governance, resource development, gift planning, grantmaking, and marketing and communications. This work will include working with Affiliates via online and remote means, as well as traveling to meet partners in person.
- Provide frequent and ongoing communication with LCF Affiliates including producing quarterly newsletter, social media, and other outreach.
- Understand and communicate how each department serves MCF Affiliates and Affiliate-partners; responsible for connecting Affiliate and Affiliate-partner requests with the proper department.
- Providing reports from various databases on the LCF program to LCF boards, MCF board, and MCF staff. Work will include producing reports, as well as analyzing reports and using reports to advance the program.
- Provide administrative support and oversight of Affiliates and Affiliate Partners including, but not limited to:
- Collect Annual Affiliate Agreement forms and Advisory Committee rosters.
- Educate Affiliates on the policies and procedures outlined in the LCF Manual.
- Reviewing and approving expense reimbursements.
- Organize annual or quarterly gatherings for Affiliate learning opportunities.
Constituent Engagement & Philanthropy
- Offer excellent services, communication, and relationship management to help LCF’s achieve their philanthropic goals. Explore ways to engage board members with program recipients, grant activity and impact, fundraising, and learning opportunities.
- Work closely with MCF Philanthropy staff to develop trainings and other resources for LCF boards and provide guidance on fundraising and philanthropy.
Operations and Systems
- Grantmaking: Conduct due diligence, documentation, and communication for LCF grants. Provide training and assistance for portal and grantmaking software systems. Work closely with Grants and Scholarship Administrator to process LCF grants.
- Program Record Management: Use online record management to enter and track all program activity and materials; initiate and monitor grant distributions; manage database records for related programs, grantees, fund holders, and committee members.

- Proficient computer skills and experience with databases.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Deep interest in and commitment to the work of the Montana Community Foundation and supporting local community development.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work quickly and accurately with multiple time deadlines.
- Strong sense of self with demonstrated qualities of integrity, loyalty, discretion, and self-motivation.
Education and Experience
- A./B.S. degree or four years’ experience working in a related field, preferably in nonprofit organizations and/or community development.
- Experience in community development or related field.
- Experience working with volunteers required.
- Experience with fundraising desired.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. The person occupying this position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing on a stool as necessary.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work/Location
This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This position may be located anywhere in Montana; however, preference will be given to applicants in locations with existing MCF offices or LCF Affiliate locations.
Compensation and Benefits
This is an hourly position at $60,000-$65,000 annually, DOE. MCF offers a competitive benefit package. Full-time regular employees are eligible to participate in group medical, dental, and vision coverage; 401(k) retirement plan; Health Savings Account; and short-term and long-term disability coverage as well as a generous PTO program.
Travel
This position requires up to 30% travel. Travel is often outside the local area and overnight.
