SUMMARY:SBA - SBIC program - Invitation to Lenders\, Venture Fund Managers\, and University Tech Transfer Offices - 10/6 - Online
DESCRIPTION:Attention Lending Partners & Institutional Investors\, \n  \nThe SBA Great Plains and Rocky Mountains Regions are hosting an information session for investors\, fund managers\, and financial institutions to learn more about the SBA – Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) Program\, licenses\, and benefits. \n  \nSBIC Information Session for Investors \nMicrosoft Teams Webinar \nTuesday\, October 6 at 2 PM CDT \nRegister \n  \nSBA provides SBIC licenses and capital to professionally managed equity and debt investment funds. The capital is in the form of government-guaranteed loans to the fund to match privately raised capital. The SBA-guaranteed loan\, paired with private capital\, increases access to capital for qualifying U.S. small businesses and startups while potentially improving risk-adjusted returns for private investors. \n  \nAdditional benefits to investment funds and limited partners include: \n\nRapid fund deployment: The potential to capitalize on as much as two-thirds of a fund with SBA leverage means managers spend less time fundraising and more time investing.\nAccess to long-term capital: SBA provides long-term funding\, which is often patient capital that aligns with the long-term growth plans of small businesses and startups. This type of capital is essential for businesses that need time to grow and establish themselves.\nFlexible terms and investment opportunities: The duration of SBA’s financing instruments can be matched with short- or long-term investments. SBICs have the flexibility to invest in a wide range of industries and sectors\, promoting diversity in their investment portfolio. This flexibility allows managers to adapt to market trends and capitalize on emerging opportunities.\nExempt from SEC registration: SBICs are exempt from SEC registration\, yet LPs benefit from the SBA’s careful monitoring of each fund’s performance and regulatory compliance.\nExempt from Volcker Rule: SBICs are exempt from the bank investment limitations set forth in the Volcker Rule as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.\nIncreased financial scale: SBA leverage allows funds to scale up their strategies and extend their financings to more businesses.\nTax advantages for LPs: An SBIC’s LPs may be eligible for tax benefits as investments in SBICs are presumed to be a “qualified investment” for Community Reinvestment Act credit.\n\n  \nThis information session will offer information on how to obtain an SBIC license and the benefits of adding SBA-backed capital and small businesses to investment portfolios. Please share this opportunity with fund managers\, institution or foundation leadership\, investors\, or others that may benefit from learning about this program. This is not intended for small businesses or entrepreneurs seeking SBIC investment. \n  \nSBIC Information Session for Investors \nMicrosoft Teams Webinar \nTuesday\, October 6 at 2 PM CDT \nRegister \n  \nThank you – \n  \nHere is the LinkedIn post as well: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/sbasouthdakota_sbic-information-session-for-investors-activity-7507788071086649345-eZv-?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAADuLi8BfWXm4edafHhRRPqqSlOUJLWtvjU \n  \n  \nBrent E. SUMMARY:Montana State to present research at Red Lodge community event Oct. 6
DESCRIPTION:Montanans will have an opportunity to learn about Montana State University’s extensive research projects at a community event in Red Lodge. \n“Bringing Research Home to Red Lodge” will be held at the Roosevelt Center\, 519 S. Broadway Ave.\, on Tuesday\, Oct. 6. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. event\, which is hosted by MSU’s Office of Research and Economic Development. Refreshments will be available. \nClose to a dozen posters featuring student-driven research will be on display at the event. There will also be three verbal presentations focused on impactful MSU research. The topics of focus are water conservation\, artificial intelligence and science communication through art. \nThe planned speakers are Eric Sproles\, MSU associate professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and director of the Geospatial Core Facility; Jack Schnepf\, a recent graduate of MSU’s studio arts program and Director of MSU’s Center for the Communication of Science; and Adam Sigler\, assistant professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences and MSU Extension water quality specialist. \nIn line with the university’s land-grant mission\, the goal of the event series is to share MSU research with communities across the state\, said Mike Veselik\, MSU’s assistant vice president for economic development and federal relations. \n“This is an inaugural event to bring research happening on campus and in our research facilities around the state to communities throughout Montana\,” Veselik said. “We look forward to engaging with cities\, towns and communities around the state to have conversations about MSU research and how we are impacting the lives of Montanans.” \nMSU strives to connect with Montanans and communicate the ways its research and outreach help people every day\, regardless of if they’ve ever set foot on the MSU campus\, Veselik said. \nFrom holding listening sessions to develop a new strategic plan for MSU in towns across the state\, to the annual bus tour that highlights how the university supports economic development in small communities\, the series is yet another way for university researchers to connect with the people their work aims to serve\, he added. \nAdditional details will be made available as the event approaches at http://www.montana.edu/calendar/events/58814. \n\nContact: Alison Harmon\, vice president for research and economic development: (406) 994-2891 or harmon@montana.edu or Mike Veselik\, Assistant Vice President for Economic Development and Federal Relations: michael.veselik@montana.edu

SUMMARY:Former Missoula-based Icon Jonathan Weber founder and editor of NewWest.Net: Reading & Signing 10/6 - Fact and Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Matt Frank\, co-founder and editor of The Pulp\, will be moderating this event! \nAbout the book: At the dawn of the 1990s\, San Francisco was a beautiful if troubled mid-sized metropolis. It was still reeling from the AIDS epidemic and the Lome Prieta earthquake\, its economy stuck in a post-industrial slump. Once considered to be the capital of the American West\, and later the beating heart of the global counterculture\, the mythic\, fog-shrouded city at the edge of the continent faced an uncertain future. \nBut in that very moment\, a band of free-thinking technologists\, immersed in the creative zeitgeist of the city\, were inventing the contemporary internet. San Francisco would undergo an epic political\, social\, and economic transformation as it claimed the title of tech capital of the world. Local politicians\, including Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris\, advanced to the national stage. An unlikely marriage of underground culture and technological optimism gave rise to the annual reverie known as Burning Man. \nThis should have been a happy story for San Francisco. But as the city’s tech economy roared\, a host of urban ills lurked in the shadows: homelessness\, drug addiction\, mental illness\, and a crippling lack of new housing. The city’s famous left-wing political establishment struggled to get its arms around the problems\, becoming a punching bag for President Trump and the new right. When the pandemic arrived in 2020\, it created new crises and laid old ones bare\, shattering a “City Family” that had ruled politically for more than thirty years and prompting a sharp rightward turn by the once-liberal tech industry. \nJonathan Weber saw it all up close as a reporter and newsroom leader. He offers a sweeping history of a city that rose to dizzying heights\, only to be undone by the heedlessness of a tech industry it did so much to spawn and politicians who had lost the plot. Drawing on 200 interviews with mayors\, CEOs\, political leaders\, activists\, entrepreneurs\, and artists\, City on the Edge is more than a simple chronicle of a city. It’s the story of a war waged for the heart of San Francisco–one that anticipated the culture wars raging around the world. Its outcome would have an impact far beyond the city’s famed Golden Gates. \nMatt Frank\, co-founder and editor of The Pulp\, will be moderating this event! \nAbout the Author: Jonathan Weber was named the Los Angeles Times’s first-ever Silicon Valley reporter in 1990. He was later editor in chief of The Industry Standard\, a chronicle of and bellwether for the first dot-com boom\, and then moved to Missoula\, where he was the founder and editor of NewWest.Net\, an early online news magazine. He later oversaw West Coast news and global technology coverage for Reuters and was most recently the editor in chief of The San Francisco Standard. \n\n\n\n\nDate: Tue\, 10/6/2026\nTime: 7:00pm – 8:30pm\nPlace: \n\n\n\nFact & Fiction\n220 N Higgins Ave\nMissoula\, MT 59802-4435\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Store Event\n\n\n\n\nEvent Related Books & Products\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n City on the Edge: Technology\, Politics\, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco \nJonathan Weber\nCurrent price: $32.00 \nHardcover\n\n\nISBN:\n9781668074916 \n\nPublish Date: 6/9/2026\n\n\n\n\nAn “absorbing” (San Francisco Chronicle) and “fascinating” (Financial Times) account of San Francisco’s meteoric transformation into a global capital of technology\, and how the same creative and political forces that gave rise to its boom now threaten to destroy what made it great. \nAt the dawn of… \nRead More about City on the Edge: Technology\, Politics\, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco \nOn Our Shelves Now
