SUMMARY:How much money do I actually need to bring in each month? J. Vader Consulting - 9/24 - Virtual
DESCRIPTION:A 60-minute working session for founders\, business owners\, and EDs who have never actually sat down and done this math. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, September 24 @ 12pm MT | Virtual | 60 minutes \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$20 a seat.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Save my spot \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you ready to find some finanicial clarity?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn September 24 at 12pm MT\, I’m hosting a 60-minute virtual Cash Flow Clarity Workshop for founders\, small business owners\, and nonprofit leaders who want a clearer answer to a pretty basic\, but often ignored\, question: How much do I actually need to bring in each month? \nIn the workshop\, we will use a simple Cash Flow Clarity tool I’ve created to: \n\n\nidentify what a business/organization must bring in to cover core monthly costs\nset a realistic monthly target to work towards\ncompare current pricing\, revenue\, or funding to that target\nleave with a practical tool that can be updated and used for decision-making\n\n\nI’d love if you’d be willing to pass this information on to any clients\, partners\, colleagues\, and friends who may be interested! The workshop is probably a good fit for someone who:\n\n\ncan’t immediately point to the number they need each month to cover their costs\nis a solopreneur and isn’t sure how much the business needs to earn to cover expenses and pay them\nis relatively new and wants to establish a financial target early\nhas been operating mostly by instinct and wants a more concrete number to plan around\n\n\nParticipants will get the most out of it if they can bring a rough list of their monthly expenses and a general idea of their income\, pricing\, or funding. They do not need perfectly organized books. \nFor someone with several years of historical data\, multiple business lines\, or a more complex financial model\, the workshop can still be a useful starting point\, but we probably won’t build out the full picture in an hour. That’s the kind of work I can also help with separately.

SUMMARY:SBA - SBIC program - Invitation to Lenders\, Venture Fund Managers\, and University Tech Transfer Offices - 10/6 - Online
DESCRIPTION:Attention Lending Partners & Institutional Investors\, \n  \nThe SBA Great Plains and Rocky Mountains Regions are hosting an information session for investors\, fund managers\, and financial institutions to learn more about the SBA – Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) Program\, licenses\, and benefits. \n  \nSBIC Information Session for Investors \nMicrosoft Teams Webinar \nTuesday\, October 6 at 2 PM CDT \nRegister \n  \nSBA provides SBIC licenses and capital to professionally managed equity and debt investment funds. The capital is in the form of government-guaranteed loans to the fund to match privately raised capital. The SBA-guaranteed loan\, paired with private capital\, increases access to capital for qualifying U.S. small businesses and startups while potentially improving risk-adjusted returns for private investors. \n  \nAdditional benefits to investment funds and limited partners include: \n\nRapid fund deployment: The potential to capitalize on as much as two-thirds of a fund with SBA leverage means managers spend less time fundraising and more time investing.\nAccess to long-term capital: SBA provides long-term funding\, which is often patient capital that aligns with the long-term growth plans of small businesses and startups. This type of capital is essential for businesses that need time to grow and establish themselves.\nFlexible terms and investment opportunities: The duration of SBA’s financing instruments can be matched with short- or long-term investments. SBICs have the flexibility to invest in a wide range of industries and sectors\, promoting diversity in their investment portfolio. This flexibility allows managers to adapt to market trends and capitalize on emerging opportunities.\nExempt from SEC registration: SBICs are exempt from SEC registration\, yet LPs benefit from the SBA’s careful monitoring of each fund’s performance and regulatory compliance.\nExempt from Volcker Rule: SBICs are exempt from the bank investment limitations set forth in the Volcker Rule as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.\nIncreased financial scale: SBA leverage allows funds to scale up their strategies and extend their financings to more businesses.\nTax advantages for LPs: An SBIC’s LPs may be eligible for tax benefits as investments in SBICs are presumed to be a “qualified investment” for Community Reinvestment Act credit.\n\n  \nThis information session will offer information on how to obtain an SBIC license and the benefits of adding SBA-backed capital and small businesses to investment portfolios. Please share this opportunity with fund managers\, institution or foundation leadership\, investors\, or others that may benefit from learning about this program. This is not intended for small businesses or entrepreneurs seeking SBIC investment. \n  \nSBIC Information Session for Investors \nMicrosoft Teams Webinar \nTuesday\, October 6 at 2 PM CDT \nRegister \n  \nThank you – \n  \nHere is the LinkedIn post as well: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/sbasouthdakota_sbic-information-session-for-investors-activity-7507788071086649345-eZv-?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAADuLi8BfWXm4edafHhRRPqqSlOUJLWtvjU \n  \n  \nBrent E. SUMMARY:Montana State to present research at Red Lodge community event Oct. 6
DESCRIPTION:Montanans will have an opportunity to learn about Montana State University’s extensive research projects at a community event in Red Lodge. \n“Bringing Research Home to Red Lodge” will be held at the Roosevelt Center\, 519 S. Broadway Ave.\, on Tuesday\, Oct. 6. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. event\, which is hosted by MSU’s Office of Research and Economic Development. Refreshments will be available. \nClose to a dozen posters featuring student-driven research will be on display at the event. There will also be three verbal presentations focused on impactful MSU research. The topics of focus are water conservation\, artificial intelligence and science communication through art. \nThe planned speakers are Eric Sproles\, MSU associate professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and director of the Geospatial Core Facility; Jack Schnepf\, a recent graduate of MSU’s studio arts program and Director of MSU’s Center for the Communication of Science; and Adam Sigler\, assistant professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences and MSU Extension water quality specialist. \nIn line with the university’s land-grant mission\, the goal of the event series is to share MSU research with communities across the state\, said Mike Veselik\, MSU’s assistant vice president for economic development and federal relations. \n“This is an inaugural event to bring research happening on campus and in our research facilities around the state to communities throughout Montana\,” Veselik said. “We look forward to engaging with cities\, towns and communities around the state to have conversations about MSU research and how we are impacting the lives of Montanans.” \nMSU strives to connect with Montanans and communicate the ways its research and outreach help people every day\, regardless of if they’ve ever set foot on the MSU campus\, Veselik said. \nFrom holding listening sessions to develop a new strategic plan for MSU in towns across the state\, to the annual bus tour that highlights how the university supports economic development in small communities\, the series is yet another way for university researchers to connect with the people their work aims to serve\, he added. \nAdditional details will be made available as the event approaches at http://www.montana.edu/calendar/events/58814. \n\nContact: Alison Harmon\, vice president for research and economic development: (406) 994-2891 or harmon@montana.edu or Mike Veselik\, Assistant Vice President for Economic Development and Federal Relations: michael.veselik@montana.edu

SUMMARY:Former Missoula-based Icon Jonathan Weber founder and editor of NewWest.Net: Reading & Signing 10/6 - Fact and Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Matt Frank\, co-founder and editor of The Pulp\, will be moderating this event! \nAbout the book: At the dawn of the 1990s\, San Francisco was a beautiful if troubled mid-sized metropolis. It was still reeling from the AIDS epidemic and the Lome Prieta earthquake\, its economy stuck in a post-industrial slump. Once considered to be the capital of the American West\, and later the beating heart of the global counterculture\, the mythic\, fog-shrouded city at the edge of the continent faced an uncertain future. \nBut in that very moment\, a band of free-thinking technologists\, immersed in the creative zeitgeist of the city\, were inventing the contemporary internet. San Francisco would undergo an epic political\, social\, and economic transformation as it claimed the title of tech capital of the world. Local politicians\, including Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris\, advanced to the national stage. An unlikely marriage of underground culture and technological optimism gave rise to the annual reverie known as Burning Man. \nThis should have been a happy story for San Francisco. But as the city’s tech economy roared\, a host of urban ills lurked in the shadows: homelessness\, drug addiction\, mental illness\, and a crippling lack of new housing. The city’s famous left-wing political establishment struggled to get its arms around the problems\, becoming a punching bag for President Trump and the new right. When the pandemic arrived in 2020\, it created new crises and laid old ones bare\, shattering a “City Family” that had ruled politically for more than thirty years and prompting a sharp rightward turn by the once-liberal tech industry. \nJonathan Weber saw it all up close as a reporter and newsroom leader. He offers a sweeping history of a city that rose to dizzying heights\, only to be undone by the heedlessness of a tech industry it did so much to spawn and politicians who had lost the plot. Drawing on 200 interviews with mayors\, CEOs\, political leaders\, activists\, entrepreneurs\, and artists\, City on the Edge is more than a simple chronicle of a city. It’s the story of a war waged for the heart of San Francisco–one that anticipated the culture wars raging around the world. Its outcome would have an impact far beyond the city’s famed Golden Gates. \nMatt Frank\, co-founder and editor of The Pulp\, will be moderating this event! \nAbout the Author: Jonathan Weber was named the Los Angeles Times’s first-ever Silicon Valley reporter in 1990. He was later editor in chief of The Industry Standard\, a chronicle of and bellwether for the first dot-com boom\, and then moved to Missoula\, where he was the founder and editor of NewWest.Net\, an early online news magazine. He later oversaw West Coast news and global technology coverage for Reuters and was most recently the editor in chief of The San Francisco Standard. \n\n\n\n\nDate: Tue\, 10/6/2026\nTime: 7:00pm – 8:30pm\nPlace: \n\n\n\nFact & Fiction\n220 N Higgins Ave\nMissoula\, MT 59802-4435\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-Store Event\n\n\n\n\nEvent Related Books & Products\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n City on the Edge: Technology\, Politics\, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco \nJonathan Weber\nCurrent price: $32.00 \nHardcover\n\n\nISBN:\n9781668074916 \n\nPublish Date: 6/9/2026\n\n\n\n\nAn “absorbing” (San Francisco Chronicle) and “fascinating” (Financial Times) account of San Francisco’s meteoric transformation into a global capital of technology\, and how the same creative and political forces that gave rise to its boom now threaten to destroy what made it great. \nAt the dawn of… \nRead More about City on the Edge: Technology\, Politics\, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco \nOn Our Shelves Now

SUMMARY:Hellgate Venture Network - SAVE THE DATE: October 15th - Monthly Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:September HVN Event RECAP\nLast month’s speaker\, Michael Gardner\, shared his family story that motivated him to start TruePenny as a means by which Montanans can actually own the businesses that operate and serve Montana. Michael also described the long and challenging journey he has been through just to establish the legal framework for TruePenny to exist. \nWe know that it is a significant challenge for many Montana businesses to access the capital they need to grow\, as they often fit somewhere between the growth requirements of angel and venture funding\, while lacking the collateral that a bank would need. TruePenny seeks to fill that gap and help Montanans invest in Montana’s businesses and economy. \nPaul Gladen said that while Michael’s talk “may not have been the best HVN pitch ever (it was still pretty darned good!)\, it might be the most important in terms of its potential impact on Montana’s entrepreneurial economy.” \n

SUMMARY:CoBuild Summit "Building the Builders: Creating Places Where Entrepreneurship Thrives" - 10/21 - Missoula
DESCRIPTION:A Montana founder has a promising idea and no idea who to call. Who picks up? \nThat’s the kind of question we’ll dig into at the CoBuild Summit in Missoula. I’m joining a panel called “Building the Builders: Creating Places Where Entrepreneurship Thrives” on October 21\, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the UC Theater on the University of Montana campus. \nBehind every new venture are people and networks. They’re what turn an idea into something real. \nWe’ll talk about mentorship\, access to expertise and capital\, and the connections that help entrepreneurs take their next step. We’ll also look at where support falls short and what could close those gaps. \nThe panel brings together entrepreneurship\, community development\, university technology transfer\, and student-led investment. I’ll be on the technology transfer side\, alongside Erik Guzik\, PhD of UM and CoBuild Montana\, Eric Harry of Flathead Valley Community College\, and a few others. \nHit a gap building something in Montana? I’d like to hear about it before the 21st. \n\n\nHarmen Steele Ph.D. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/share:7515238413655273472/ \n31 Startups. 4 Countries. 10 Finalists. From healthcare and artificial intelligence to manufacturing\, consumer products\, cybersecurity\, and environmental innovation\, these founders are tackling real problems and developing new solutions. \nWe’re excited to announce the 10 finalists who will take the stage in Missoula\, including startups from across Montana–and the country: \nForest Future — Missoula\nindelible.Imagery — Missoula\nMontana Critical Metals Inc. — Missoula\nMontana Fragrance Company — Kalispell\nOpen Security — San Antonio\, TX\nScience & Technology Integrated Solutions — Austin\, TX\nStarSync Studio — Stevensville\nThe Healing Lab — Big Sky\nViz Ai Technology — Kalispell\nZenroll — Princeton\, NJ \nCongratulations to all ten finalists! And thank you to every startup that applied. \nNow comes the exciting part. On Wednesday\, October 21\, the finalists will pitch their ventures live before a panel of judges and an audience of entrepreneurs\, investors\, business leaders\, students\, and community members. \nOne startup will be named the Montana Regional Champion and advance to the Startup World Cup in San Francisco\, November 4–6\, where they will have the opportunity to compete for an investment prize of up to $1 million. \nBut there’s something else worth celebrating. \nEntrepreneurship isn’t confined to Silicon Valley or major metropolitan centers. Great ideas can emerge anywhere\, and Montana can be a place where entrepreneurs from across the country come together to connect\, compete\, and build. Join us and see what these entrepreneurs are building. \n📍 UC Theater\, University of Montana\, Missoula.\n📅 Wednesday\, October 21\, 2026\n🕕 6:00–8:00 PM. Doors open at 5:00 PM. SUMMARY:A practical look at federal funding that doesn't cost you equity. - 10/28 - Missoula
DESCRIPTION:22 seats. 90 minutes. A practical look at federal funding that doesn’t cost you equity. University of Montana this is a great opportunity! \nOn Wednesday\, October 28\, the Montana Technology Innovation Partnership powered by MSU TechLink Center\, is hosting Navigating SBIR: From Idea to Impact at MonTEC in Missoula. \n📅 Wednesday\, October 28\n⏰ 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. workshop\n🥂 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. happy hour and networking\n📍 MonTEC\, 1121 E. Broadway Street\, Missoula \nThe federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs can provide significant non-dilutive funding to develop technology and move it toward commercialization. If you’re a researcher\, founder or part of a team moving an idea toward the market\, they’re worth understanding. \nThe workshop is interactive and in person\, and it sticks to the practical side: how to identify opportunities\, what federal agencies are looking for\, how proposals are evaluated\, what goes into a competitive application and why the right collaborators matter. There will also be examples of companies that have used SBIR/STTR funding\, connections to Montana resources and partners\, and plenty of time for questions. \nThen stick around. MTIP and MonTEC are hosting a happy hour with tech founders and what I’m told will be some very serious hors d’oeuvres. \nOne thing I keep appreciating about Montana’s innovation community is how many people are willing to help researchers and entrepreneurs figure out the next step. If you have an idea with commercial potential and aren’t sure how to fund it\, this is a good place to start. \nRegistration link is in the first comment. \nWith only 22 spots\, I’d sign up early.
