Gov. Brad Little will host and speak on Tuesday (Dec. 3) at the workshop of the Reimagining the Rural West Initiative in Post Falls, Idaho. The Governor also will moderate discussions on rural energy and natural resource infrastructure challenges (Watch here). Plus: see all sessions of our Santa Fe and Fargo workshops, including keynotes by Governors Michelle Lujan Grisham and Doug Burgum, on WGA’s YouTube channel.
The lineup of Governors keeps growing for our 2019 Winter Meeting, with 10 Western Governors now scheduled to attend. They include WGA Chair Gov. Doug Burgum (North Dakota) and Vice Chair Kate Brown (Oregon), along with: Doug Ducey (Arizona), Jared Polis (Colorado), David Ige (Hawaii), Brad Little (Idaho), Michelle Lujan Grisham (New Mexico), Kevin Stitt (Oklahoma), Kristi Noem (South Dakota), and Gary Herbert (Utah). The Governors will be joined by several special guests, including keynoters visionary Dean Kamen and CEO Beth Ford of Land O’Lakes, a cooperative of 4,000 farmers that impacts half of all American farmland. There’s still time to secure your seat for the Dec. 13-14 meeting at the Four Seasons in Las Vegas. Register now.
Policy: Governors weigh in on DOI strategic plan for invasive species, PILT/SRS funding
Western Governors recently provided comments to the Department of the Interior on its invasive species strategic plan. That follows on the heels of the Governors communicating the importance of funding the Payment in Lieu of Taxes and Secure Rural Schools programs in outreach to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (Letter). WGA also shared policy on apprenticeships for a hearing of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment (Letter) and expressed support for provisions of the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act of 2019 that fund proactive conservation of at-risk species and habitats (Letter).
Read the ‘Best’ of WGA’s Best of the West
The Best of the West team is taking the week off to celebrate with family and friends. But they still wanted to share the bounty of good stories about the West they’ve been serving up in recent weeks. So while you wait for all your holiday food to settle, consider checking out past reports, including: rural economic development success stories, a closer look at the threats to the region’s sagebrush habitats, an examination of how prescribed burns can fight fires, and the arrival of unmanned air taxis.
SAVE THE DATES: 2020 Annual Meeting, June 29-July 2, Medora, North Dakota
