Montana State ‘s Wheeler Center to host Sept. 20 lecture about Sen. Mike Mansfield

September 20 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Former U.S. Sen. Mike Mansfield and his bipartisan work with colleagues in Congress in the 1960s will be the subject of a lecture at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Strand Union Building Ballroom A, hosted by the Burton K. Wheeler Center and Montana State University.

The lecture, “Montana, Mansfield and the Lost Art of Bipartisanship,” will be given by author and historian Marc C. Johnson, who will discuss what he characterizes as the complex relationship between Montana’s Mansfield, a Democrat, and Republican U.S. Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois during the turbulent 1960s. Drawing on extensive Senate archives, Johnson will explore the congressional careers of these leaders, their relationships with Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, their own close professional friendship, and their commitment to bipartisanship.

“Mansfield and Dirksen: Bipartisan Giants of the Senate.”
