Local Solutions by Local People: Building Resiliency through Opportunity Development Cooperatives

September 28 @ 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Please join the Montana Cooperative Development Center for a workshop on an emerging cooperative structure that is already proving successful in revitalizing communities, growing local leadership, and creating sustainable businesses. Opportunity Development Cooperatives allow members to make capital investments in buildings, businesses, and causes to help their communities grow and prosper.

Opportunity Development Cooperatives have a proven track record with our neighbors to the north. Dan Ohler, Co-op Specialist & Professional Coach at Thinkin’ Outside The Barn, will present his experience in his home town of Sangudo, Alberta and subsequent work developing the Unleashing Local Capital Program across Alberta.

This workshop will consist of an introduction to cooperatives, insight into opportunity development cooperatives from an experienced professional, and focused breakout sessions with plenty of time for discussion.

Dan Ohler:

Dan Ohler is a proud husband, father, and community-builder. Through his business, Thinkin Outside The Barn, he is a professional relationship coach, speaker, and business consultant.

At home in Sangudo, Alberta and concerned about the social and economic death of their rural community, a small dedicated group incorporated Sangudo Opportunity Development Co-op (SODC) in 2010. It was the first of its kind in Canada, which has unleashed close to $1 million of local capital into economic development in the small rural community. Because of his involvement as co-founder and Board Chair he then worked with the Alberta Community & Co-operative Association to develop the Unleashing Local Capital program and support the application of the model across Western Canada. Dan loves the Co-op philosophy and supports this model every chance he gets.
