College of Veterinary Medicine Feasibility Study Findings & Lunch Invitation

Hello Russ,,

I have been remiss in sending out this reminder about an exciting event we are hosting with Benefis Health System this Tuesday.

One of the actions in the Economic Development Strategy we adopted in June was to find a prospect and commission a feasibility study to create another health-related professional school in Great Falls. Our top priority in this regard has been a veterinary school that would produce veterinarians likely to practice in Montana and surrounding rural states including large animal care critical to our ranching industry.

Montana doesn’t have a vet school, nor does Idaho, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Nebraska. Veterinary care for pets and stock animals is critical to our economy and way of life.

We had expected it would take quite some time to find a prospect, which we defined as an established successful non-profit university that would consider creating a veterinary school here. Instead, it happened almost overnight. The consulting firm that we had retained to develop our Health and Bioscience Economic Development Strategic Plan in 2022, Tripp Umbach, connected us with Roseman University of Health Sciences. We met with Roseman’s leadership virtually, followed by multiple visits back and forth, culminating in a joint decision to partner to commission a feasibility study, funded 50/50 by GFDA and Roseman.

The findings of the feasibility study document the acute need for veterinary education in Montana, the advantages of locating a school in Great Falls, and the challenges to overcome to create such a school. The study also developed a unique distributed model for a veterinary school that would embed students with existing veterinary care practices across the state and beyond, providing real-life experience to the students and much needed support for current veterinarians. It would also expose the students to the wonderful benefits of living and working in rural and tribal Montana.

Lastly, the study details the economic impact of creating a vet school in Montana.

We are very excited to share these findings with you and give you the opportunity to meet the leadership of Roseman University.

Please join us for lunch and the release of the study in the Cameron Auditorium at Benefis Health System from Noon to 1:30 PM this Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

Please register below as soon as possible and as space is limited. The event will also be streamed via zoom, registration is required to obtain the Zoom Link. Upon registering you will receive the event Zoom link.

Thank you for your continued support of our economic development work. This opportunity would not have been possible without our GFDA investors.
