Montana Biodiesel fuel experiment begins

An experiment with a biodiesel fuel blend in state snowplows started Monday in Western Montana.

Maintenance workers at the Montana Department of Trans-portation’s Lolo South shop will use a 20 percent blend in three plows through the winter.

Interest arose in this year’s legislative session after Rep. Holly Raser, D-Missoula, sponsored a bill that would have required all diesel fuel sold for combustion engines to contain at least 2 percent biodiesel. The transportation department was asked to conduct field tests after Raser’s bill was tabled because of questions about the fuel.

Sue Sillick, research section supervisor, said the study will look at issues such as cold weather storage, emissions and potential engine damage.

A second test is also planned at the transportation department’s Havre shop.
