Gov. Bullock Announces Expanded Access to Dual Enrollment for Montana’s Students – "One-Two-Free"

Today, I announced the "One-Two-Free" initiative that will substantially increase access to higher education through dual enrollment for high school students throughout Montana.

When I first took office in 2013, there were around 2,500 enrollments in dual credit in Montana. Last school year, there were more than 6,000 enrollments.

Over the years, we’ve worked to offer more opportunities for students to get started with college-level coursework while still in high school. And, we’ve increased the number of schools offering dual credit, in both rural and urban communities.

The "One-Two-Free" initiative offers two free dual enrollment courses through the Montana University System to all eligible high school students. Compared to paying university tuition and fees, Montana students and their families will save an average of $1,190 through the "One-Two-Free" program.

By eliminating the barrier of cost, we’re ensuring that all throughout our state students have exposure to the opportunities that college provides.

Study after study shows that students who took dual credit coursework in high school have higher first-year post-secondary grade point averages, higher second-year rates and higher four- and six-year college completion rates.

Dual enrollment programs help a diverse set of students access college courses that shows them they can succeed. Those students – who may never have thought they were college material – get a rigorous and engaging post-secondary experience, and the data tells us those students are more likely to pursue post-secondary degree.

Students are also getting a number of options in courses – from foundational courses in college algebra and American history, to courses that engage students with a diverse selection of careers like welding, health sciences, web design, and early childhood development.

The Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education has begun the implementation of "One-Two-Free" this academic semester. Students wishing to participate can find more information by visiting their website HERE.

Dual enrollment is making a difference for students, families, and employers across our state by saving money, streamlining workforce preparation, and inspiring more students to pursue higher education or technical careers.

Sincerely,

STEVE BULLOCK
Governor
