A Wyoming Internet provider is completing the installation of DSL service in Cody.

Visionary Communications, based in Gillette, said its broadband services will be available soon to 95 percent of Cody’s 9,000 residents. The service is billed as an alternative to broadband services offered by cable companies.

"We are excited about being the first company to offer DSL in Cody, although Qwest is definitely on our heels," said chief executive Brian Worthen.

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. The always-connected Internet service transmits data at speeds of 200 kilobytes per second and up.

Visionary Communications is the sister company of InTTec, which is the competitive local exchange carrier in Wyoming.

Visionary said it is completing DSL service in Gillette and wants to install the technology in Buffalo and Douglas next spring.

The company started in 1994 and specializes in offering broadband services for rural areas. Visionary said it serves 18,000 customers in 90 Wyoming communities.
