Wyoming State Workforce Service program among best in the nation

A Wyoming Department of Workforce Service program is among the top 10 in the nation at getting jobs for older workers, according to a report released Wednesday.

The department’s Senior Community Service Employment Program provides low-income residents 55 years or older with subsidized, minimum wage jobs in community service positions.

It was ranked sixth in the country by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration in its 2002 national standings.

According to state officials, the program — in conjunction with Wyoming Senior Citizen, Inc., of Riverton — has gotten jobs for 45 percent of its participants.

Participants receive skill enhancement opportunities, physical examinations, personal and employment-related counseling and assistance in the transition to employment through the program.

Rule would tax catalog sales

Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., introduced legislation Wednesday that would help states begin to recover from years of budget shortfalls by allowing them to collect revenue from catalog and Internet sales.

Enzi said e-commerce has reduced sales tax revenue in many states. The Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Act would make sales and use tax collection simpler and more fair, he said.

"This legislation does not increase taxes, create a new tax or tax access on the Internet," Enzi said.

Under the legislation, states could require remote sellers to collect and remit sales and use taxes by joining a national compact. States that choose not to join the compact would not be required to modify their tax systems as a result, Enzi said.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee.
