NAU gets grant to work on wireless technology – The trees are talking

A $1.8 million grant has been given to Northern Arizona University researchers working on applications for wireless phone technology.

The National Science Foundation grant will help the Wireless Networks Research Laboratory install wireless monitors on trees.

The monitors will send back data on light and temperature on different parts of the trees to help scientists understand the effects of global warming on micro-climates.

"It will free us from having to install complicated, messy links of wires in our ecological research settings," said George Koch, an NAU associate professor of biology involved in the project. "It will get us away from the spaghetti networks."

The monitors are designed to more efficiently collect and send back the data.

The wireless project started about 2½ years ago with a $20,000 NAU grant. Later, the National Science Foundation provided its first grant for the project for $100,000.
