Arizona’s Capitol to Offer Free Wireless Service

Arizona State Senator Dean Martin and Rep. Bob Robson announced the successful culmination of their efforts with Cox Communications and Intel Corp. to have a "proof of concept" demonstration project that will showcase the "P.O.W.E.R." of a free wireless Internet hotspot to be located at the Arizona Legislature.

Through the P.O.W.E.R. (Public Online Wireless Electronic Resource) Network, the Arizona Legislature is the first in the country to host wireless Internet access for the general public visiting the Arizona House of Representatives and Senate in downtown Phoenix.

The P.O.W.E.R. Network, created through a public/private collaboration with Intel Solution Services and Cox Communications, allows all visitors free wireless Internet access at the Legislature. Wireless (WiFi) connectivity via P.O.W.E.R. allows people to stay productive and connected on the go. Working without wires or phone jacks, people can access files from their laptops, do research on the Internet or collaborate instantly via Web mail with team members in their home office.

"This project will really open up the legislative process to working Arizonans who cannot be out of contact with their offices or families to come to the Capitol and testify on a bill. We are empowering the average person to actively participate in their government with electronic access to the same information as legislators and a live connection to the outside world," said Martin.

"In 2002, the Arizona Legislature received the most digital legislature award in the country by the Center for Digital Government and Government Technology magazine," Robson said. "The P.O.W.E.R. Network is one more step in our journey to advancing governance through electronic access and participation in the legislative process."

Cox Communications and Intel Solution Services collaborated to engineer and install these wireless hotspots as a demonstration project. It has specific areas of coverage and availability. The P.O.W.E.R. Network will be available to the public at the start of the next regular session in January 2004.
