From Bozeman to Bend, how two cities are responding to growth

The question remains: How will Bozeman grow?

Can we retain all that makes our city special? Will we be overrun by those seeking what we’ve already found? Are we destined to become a place only the super rich can afford? Why should we care?

As we as a community grapple with these questions, it’s also worth asking what can we learn from other cities that have boomed before us. What did they do well? Where did they fail?

So, beginning today with a story about Bend, Oregon, and with the help of a grant from Solutions Journalism Network, the Chronicle is launching a series of articles we’re calling "Postcards from Bozeman’s future." More will follow in the months ahead. It’s a lofty goal, to be sure, but we hope these stories will help our community decide its future. – Nick Ehli
