Waymo Finds Michigan’s Unpredictable Winter Weather Perfect For Teaching Cars To Drive Themselves

Human drivers need to learn how to handle snowy, icy road conditions. So do self-driving cars.

That’s why Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving car unit, will begin testing its autonomous driving technology on public roads near Detroit as the weather turns colder.

The testing will enable Waymo to build on the advanced driving skills developed so far, like how to handle skidding on icy, unplowed roads. Its goal is to make fully self-driving cars that can operate safely and smoothly in any environment.
