Western Governors’ Workforce Development Initiative

On behalf of the Western Governors’ Association, I am writing to provide you with some information regarding the Western Governors’ Workforce Development Initiative.

As WGA’s Chair in 2017-18, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard recently launched the Initiative to leverage the region’s best thinking to help bridge the gap between prospective workers and employers in the West. Among other things, this initiative will create a mechanism for states and industry sectors to share best practices in workforce development. WGA will deploy a variety of tools to engage experts, opinion leaders and stakeholders in a deep examination of critical workforce issues. One goal of the initiative will be to create enhanced career opportunities for students, graduates and displaced workers to help build a more vibrant regional economy.

To identify and frame key workforce issues for Governors, WGA will conduct a series of workshops, each hosted by a Western Governor. The first workshop is scheduled for August 3-4, 2017 in Sioux Falls, SD, with subsequent workshops to be hosted by Western Governors across the West this fall.
