Montana Department of Transportation is currently recruiting businesses for the Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Program Certification

The Department of Transportation is currently recruiting businesses for the Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Program and wanted to notify you of the opportunity to become certified/recognized as a small business. We encourage all small highway, transit and aviation related businesses to participate; however, we will certify any business that meets the eligibility criteria.

What is an SBE?

A Small Business Enterprise (SBE) is a business that meets the following criteria:

The majority owner(s) personal net worth must be less than $1.32 million, excluding ownership interest in the firm and equity in their primary residence

Meets United States Small Business Administration (SBA) standards for small businesses

Must not have averaged annual gross receipts over $23,980,000 in the previous three fiscal years

Must be a for profit firm

Independently owned and operated

The majority owner/applicant must have the expertise to control the operations of the firm and make the day to day as well as long term decisions for the firm

How to get SBE Certified?

Firms interested in becoming SBE certified should complete the application and provide all supporting documentation (listed on the final page of the application) http://www.mdt.mt.gov/other/webdata/external/civilrights/forms/DOT-DBE-Certification-Application.pdf to:

Montana Department of Transportation
ATTN: DBE/SBE Program
PO Box 201001
Helena MT 59620

After all requested materials have been provided, MDT will conduct an on-site review of the firm. MDT considers all information provided from the application and on-site review to determine eligibility.

Why get SBE Certified?

In addition to elements that foster small business participation, the SBE certification enables the small business to be:

Listed on MDT’s SBE Directory

Notified of upcoming trainings opportunities

Included in solicitations from MDT’s Quote Request System that enables contractors to directly solicit bids for a specific project from certified DBE and SBE firms

Highway related firms may receive up to $2500 a year in reimbursements (as funding allows) for expenses such as trainings, licenses, plans rooms, bonding, etc.

All firms certified as Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) also qualify for the SBE and do not need to apply for both programs. The DBE Program is for businesses 51% woman and minority businesses owned and the application can be found here. http://www.mdt.mt.gov/other/webdata/external/civilrights/forms/DOT-DBE-Certification-Application.pdf
