Montana Career Opportunity – GIS Data Acquisition Analyst – onXmaps

The role of the Data Acquisition Analyst is to establish and maintain contacts with municipalities to facilitate vector data as well as maintain the team’s custom data processing toolbox.

Responsibilities include the initial evaluation of licensing agreements, documenting vendor and data details, facilitating the purchasing of qualified data, and standardizing the procured data. Additional duties including maintaining and adding to the teams set of custom tools used to automate the standardization of the parcel data, and automating other workflows with python scripting procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Communicate with counties and governmental agencies via telephone, email and website to procure vector data;

Gather and maintain comprehensive documentation of metadata on existing and procured data, including but not limited to: contact information, price, and existing legal restrictions;

Evaluate license agreements provided by communities and in cases where data is restricted, negotiation with communities to successfully procure data that can be used for product development;

Utilize tools such as ArcMap, ArcCatalog, Microsoft Excel, Airtable, and Google Spreadsheets to ensure that the correct data was received;

Run standardization tools and manually edit data before forwarding to other members of the GIS Department;

Automation of geoprocessing operations using arcpy;

Creation of new custom tools;

Data manipulation using Python;

Research and analyze new technologies;

Document and track status of data within Airtable inventories;

Utilize templates to write letters and forms;

Communicate with Data Acquisition team members and GIS Department to ensure timely processing of parcel data;

Communicate and coordinate with relevant employees for data purchasing;

Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops as requested.

The position is a member of a team that includes other Data Acquisition staff who share these duties. These positions regularly provide back-up support to other team members and functions.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Minimum Education:

The above competencies and degrees of proficiency are typically acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in Cartography, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), or closely related field. Other combinations of education will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Certifications: N/A

Minimum Experience:

Three (3) years full-time technical experience preferred.

Other Qualifications:

Direct hands on experience utilizing both telephone and email to procure data or other information;

Experience with software such as ArcMap, ArcCatalog and Google Sheets;

Knowledge & experience in ESRI suite products;

Experience with automation of geoprocessing operations using arcpy;

Experience with data and file management automation using Python;

Experience creating custom ArcGIS tools;

Experience using regular expressions in Python;

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills;

Must have patience for repetitive tasks;

Requires a detail-oriented, highly organized self-starter;

Must be able to handle many different tasks which may be assigned by different individuals and develop solutions as challenges arise;

Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and working relationship with GIS staff and other onXmaps employees.
