Governor’s Update: Montana Outdoor Manufacturing Roundtable

March 9, 2017View for printing

In Montana, our public lands are our heritage. They are our birthright. They define who we are as Montanans. They are one of our great equalizers and they contribute to our rich quality of life. Put simply, our great outdoor heritage is part of who we are, an understanding that will stand the test of time.

Montanans back up these words with action. That is why today I invited outdoor industry business leaders and public access advocates from across the state to discuss ways to grow Montana’s outdoor recreation economy, create jobs, and further champion our public lands and access to them.

The outdoor recreation industry is a massive driver of Montana’s strong economy with plenty of room to grow. Montana is rightfully known for our public access to stunning landscapes, blue-ribbon fishing, and world class hunting, and we are also proud of the efforts we have made to ensure Montana is one of the best places to do business—and that it remains that way for generations to come.

Our business climate matches our quality of life. Montana is consistently ranked in the top ten states for best business tax climate—and with no sales tax. Montana was recently ranked the number one state for entrepreneurial activity for the fourth year in a row. Our positive business climate continues to foster growth and promote innovation.

I continue to reach out across Montana and to the outdoor industry associations for regional opportunities that will further enhance Montana’s outdoor industry and manufacturing. Please contact me with your own ideas about how best to champion our public lands at:

I look forward to continuing today’s conversation with industry leaders and all Montanans as we explore more ways to encourage job creation and economic growth within the outdoor manufacturing industry.

Montana Considers Options to Lure Outdoor Retailer Expo

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock convened an outdoor recreation summit in the Capitol on Thursday, as state officials explore a bid for one of the country's largest outdoor trade expos.

Montana officials said they are continuing to explore a bid for one of the country's largest outdoor trade expos, even as they acknowledged Thursday that they may not have adequate facilities to host the massive event.

Nevertheless, Gov. Steve Bullock has directed his economic development team to draft a bid for the Outdoor Retailers Show, which could be held in Salt Lake City this summer for the last time.
