University of Montana enrollment drops, but officials optimistic

Enrollment of full time students at the University of Montana fell 5.45 percent from spring 2016 to spring 2017, and the head count fell 2.8 percent – but the drop wasn’t as steep as UM officials anticipated.

The head count this spring is 11,615 compared to 11,955 one year ago, and UM President Sheila Stearns said Thursday she had thought the head count might fall closer to 11,000. The count includes Missoula College.

"The fact that it’s coming in at 11,600 is a bit of lemonade to me," Stearns said. "It’s not lemon. That’s a fact."
