These labels let you compare Internet plans like you do with cereal or deli meats

The government gets thousands of complaints a year from consumers who are surprised by some of the charges they see on their bills, according to the FCC. These broadband labels aim to address those concerns.

When you pick up two different kinds of cereal, how do you know which one is healthier? One way is to look at the nutrition labeling, which tells you a lot about the presence of sugars, carbohydrates and other ingredients.

Federal regulators want to do the same for Internet service, in an effort to cut through the fine print and give you a better idea of what you’re actually paying for. The labels, unveiled Monday by the Federal Communications Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, do look similar to what you’d find in the grocery store aisle.
