Missoula Merc advocate quits Historic Preservation Commission to help lead a "Save the Merc" campaign

The author of a book on downtown Missoula’s historic underground has resigned her seat on the Missoula Historic Preservation Commission http://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/495/Historic-Preservation amid the furor over the Missoula Mercantile building http://www.themercdowntown.com/ .

"It just seems like it’s kind of a useless board at this point," said Nikki Manning, a doctorate student at the University of Montana and the anthropology department’s public archaeologist.

She said she will instead help lead a "Save the Merc" campaign https://www.facebook.com/SavetheMerc/ under the auspices of the nonprofit Preserve Historic Missoula. It’s something Manning said she couldn’t do as a member of the city board.
